«Here we explain one of the most frequent doubts that students who take the Specific Competencies Tests have to access a Spanish university. Not all calculators are allowed and not all subjects allow calculators. Knowing which one to take to the exams is very important to avoid making mistakes or penalties.

What subjects allow the use of a calculator?

We are going to start by explaining that not all subjects allow the use of the calculator, as is normal. So, in the subjects that you can (and should) take your calculator with you are:

  • CCSS Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Chemicals
  • Company and Business Model Design.
  • Geography of Spain

As you can see, the use of calculators is not permitted for Mathematics II.

What type of calculator is allowed on PCE exams?

The regulations are subject to change. However, there are two types of calculators that are permitted: non-programmable scientific calculators and non-programmable non-scientific calculators (i.e., those that add, subtract, multiply, divide, and little else).

And in which ones can I use one or the other? Well now we tell you:

  • CCSS Mathematics – Non-scientific and Non-programmable Calculator
  • Physics – Non-programmable scientific calculator
  • Geography – Non-programmable scientific calculator
  • Chemistry – Non-programmable scientific calculator
  • Business and Business Model Design – Non-programmable Scientific Calculator

What is a scientific calculator?

A scientific calculator is one that can perform advanced mathematical processes, such as square roots, exponents, and percentages. It's suitable for university entrance exams because it can perform the necessary operations without memorizing external data.

What is a programmable calculator?

A programmable calculator is one that can be modified for a specific purpose. They can also store mathematical functions and data, making them excellent for many jobs. However, they are not suitable for university entrance exams, as they may store theoretical content that students could use to copy answers.

How to choose the best calculator?

If you don't have a calculator or want one for your PCE Selectividad tests, we'll show you some, but you should know what they should NOT have:

  • Transfer data
  • Operations with matrices
  • Calculation of derivatives, integrals and determinants
  • Programmable
  • Graphical representation of functions

This is great, because you won't have to spend a lot of money getting a calculator for your tests.

The best calculators for Selectivity

We leave you a list so you can see some of the calculators allowed in Selectivity subjects:

CCSS Mathematics

Physics, Geography, Chemistry, and Business and Business Model Design
