«Perhaps, the choice of subjects to prepare for entry to a Spanish university is the most important point in the process. Knowing how many subjects, which ones, and their choice, is crucial to have opportunities to access the study we want.»

Many students ask us what subjects they have to study for a certain university degree. We understand that, given so much information regarding foreign high school graduates who want to access a Spanish university, this can be complicated. That's why, We have summarized in this article what tests you have to take depending on what you want to study and where. Before describing it to you, we recommend that you watch the video we have made, where we explain everything step by step.

As we have always mentioned, the first and most important thing is to know where we want to study. Because? Well, because each university will ask us for a requirement that may be different from another. For example, in Madrid they will ask us for the Modality criterion and present 4 subjects, in Barcelona 6 EBAU type subjects or in Galicia only 2 subjects.

If you don't know what to study, maybe the first thing you should do is our Vocational test. And if you want, you can also see the easier subjects for PCE Selectivity.

In summary, here you can see how many subjects you have to take the PCE tests to obtain the maximum score:

  • 2 subjects: European and Chinese high school graduates, Colombians or with International Baccalaureate. Also the universities of Galicia.
  • 4 subjects: Madrid, Valencia, Murcia, Extremadura, León, Salamanca, Valladolid and Burgos. In these cases they can request the Baccalaureate Modality, an extra requirement.
  • 6 subjects: the rest of the universities. They ask for an EBAU structure, which is the same as for Spanish high school graduates (having an EBAU structure does not mean having to take the same exams as the Spanish. It refers only to their choice of subjects to take).

2 PCE subjects

If you only have to take two subjects, you are in luck. In this case, you will have to present the PCE of the two subjects that matter most to you. You can see this on the destination university page, searching for Weightings in the search engine followed by the university.

4 PCE subjects

This structure began to be implemented in 2017. It is the new version, given that previously the configuration for all universities was 6. However, if you want to study at a public university in Madrid, for example, you have to take 4 subjects . Although there are fewer subjects than in other regions of Spain, you have to have the Modality criteria configured. Advantage or disadvantage? That only depends on yourself.

Some universities request only 4 subjects, without Modality requirement. Here is the summary:

  • If you request Modality: Madrid, Salamanca, León, Valladolid and Burgos.
  • They do not ask for Modality: Valencia and Murcia

Below we indicate the best subject configurations depending on what type of study you want to do. You have to choose a subject from each block according to your itinerary. On which subject is better, it will depend on the weightings that that university give to those subjects, having to choose the one that has the best multiplication.

So, if we want to study…(some combinations)

  • Reproductive – One from block 1 and Mathematics II, Biology and Chemistry
  • Business Management – One of block 1 and CS Mathematics, Geography and Business and business model design.
  • Archeology – One from block 1, a language (that we have not chosen in the previous block) and History of Art and Philosophy

These are some examples, but there are many possible combinations depending on the university degree you want to pursue. If you have any questions, write to the destination university so they can advise you and recommend you.

6 PCE subjects

This configuration is the original, which is similar to that made by a Spanish high school student. The difference is that they are different exams, given that what a non-Spanish high school graduate takes is the PCE and a Spanish high school graduate takes the EBAU itself. In addition, the PCE are presented at the UNED and the EBAU in public universities.

If you want to study at any university in Spain with an EVAU/EBAU criteria, such as Catalonia or Andalusia, you will have to do a general phase and a specific phase, taking 6 exams to obtain the highest grade. Sometimes just doing the general phase is enough, but that depends on each personal case. We make the following recommendation: If the cut-off grade for your chosen career has a grade higher than 8, it is better that you do the specific phase as well. Below we show you some example:

So, once again, we would like to point out the importance of knowing from the start WHAT to study and WHERE, as this will save us a lot of time and trouble. Always ask the host university and confirm your choice with professionals. We have seen many students advised by other academies with a bad set-up, ruining the year of study. For this reason, trust academies like Escuela PCE, where we do a personal study of all our students.

If you have questions, don't forget that you can hire our Advisory service to be able to guide you in this choice of subjects and all the future processes you need.

  1. Hello, my name is Zulanid and I am Colombian and I live in Catalonia. I have already homologated my high school diploma and they gave me a grade of 8. I also requested accreditation from the UNED to see if with that grade I could enter the U without doing the PCE but the grade they gave me was 5,786. I want to study Business Administration at the URV and I understand that the cut-off grade they ask for is 7,8 and I have the doubt if it is necessary for me to take the 6 subjects or just the 2 specific ones that weigh me the most.

  3. Good afternoon. I want to study computer engineering at the UPV. My high school diploma is Colombian and I have a UNED grade of 9.17. I have Spanish nationality. I want to raise my grade because of the cut-off point they ask for. I know I have to choose 4 subjects for the PSE but I don't know which ones because of their level of complexity. I would have loved to take the English test but I don't think they would take it into account. Please could you advise me which subjects to choose? Thank you.

  5. Hi, I'm Spanish and I studied in Chile. To get into marketing, what subjects do I have to take? And for the other subjects, do I have to take the test as a foreigner or as a Spaniard? Which is better for me?

    • As for the subjects, it depends on the university. And as for the exams, nationality is not binding. What matters is where you have your secondary or high school studies. Best regards.

  8. Hello, I would like to study Law at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. According to the weighting table, the two extra subjects I would take would be business and business model, and mathematics applied to social sciences. In this case, of the four compulsory subjects I would take, could art history or mathematics count as a compulsory subject?

    Reply
    • Yes, if you register correctly you can take CCSS Mathematics in the general and specific phases, adding both. However, if you fail the exam it will count for a lot, so be careful and prepare yourself with guarantees.

  9. Hello! I live in Portugal and I am fluent in Spanish. I wanted to try to get into medicine in Spain. My grade converted to the Spanish grade is 8,4. From what I've seen, PCE grades can only add a maximum of 4 points. So, do I have no chance of getting into medicine? I wanted to get into the University of Extremadura.
