What did the Spanish Civil War consist of?

The Spanish Civil War, which took place between 1936 and 1939, was an armed conflict that pitted Republican forces against Francoist forces, led by General Francisco Franco. This war left deep scars on Spanish history and society, the consequences of which are still felt today.

Historic context

Before the outbreak of war, Spain had gone through a period of political and social instability known as the Second Republic, established in 1931 after the fall of the monarchy of Alfonso XIII. The Second Republic attempted to implement democratic reforms and modernize the country, but it also generated tensions and confrontations between left and right political forces.

Causes of the war

Policies

The political causes of the Spanish Civil War are found in the deep divisions between the republican forces, which defended a democratic system and popular sovereignty, and the Franco forces, who sought to establish a military and authoritarian dictatorship. These tensions were exacerbated by the ideological polarization and political instability that characterized the Second Republic, where different political groups fought for power.

Social

The social causes of the war include tensions between social classes, especially between the landed aristocracy and bourgeoisie, on the one hand, and the working class and peasants, on the other. Furthermore, there were regional and nationalist tensions in areas such as Catalonia and the Basque Country, which sought greater autonomy or even independence.

Economics

The economic causes of the war are related to poverty and economic inequality, which affected a large part of the Spanish population. The economic and social reforms proposed by the Second Republic failed to solve these problems, which aggravated tensions between the different social classes and contributed to the outbreak of war.

The outbreak of war

The government coup

On July 17, 1936, a group of soldiers led by General Francisco Franco rose up against the Republican government, starting the Civil War. The coup d'état was supported by conservative, fascist political forces and sectors of the Catholic Church, who saw the republican government as a threat to their interests and values.

The beginning of the conflict

The Civil War began as a fight between republican forces, who defended the democratically elected government, and Francoist forces, who sought to impose a military dictatorship. Both sides attracted national and international volunteers, and the conflict soon became an all-out war that affected all of Spanish society.

Main stages and battles

The advance of the Francoists

During the first stage of the war, Franco's forces achieved important victories on the military front, such as the conquest of Badajoz, Toledo and the capital, Madrid. This allowed them to consolidate their control over much of Spanish territory, especially in the north and west of the country.

The republican resistance

Despite Franco's advance, the republican forces did not surrender and continued fighting in defense of democracy. Some of the most important and well-known battles of the war took place during this stage, such as the Battle of the Ebro and the Battle of Teruel. However, the Republican forces were eventually defeated, and the war ended with the Francoist victory in April 1939.

Consequences of the Spanish Civil War

Deaths and suffering

The Spanish Civil War left around half a million dead, both combatants and civilians, and caused enormous suffering among the population. Furthermore, the war caused the destruction of infrastructure and cities, leaving the country in ruins.

Franco's dictatorship

Franco's victory in the war led to the establishment of a military dictatorship that lasted until his death in 1975. During this period, Spain suffered political and social repression, with thousands of people imprisoned, tortured or executed for their political ideas. Furthermore, Franco's dictatorship isolated Spain from the rest of Europe and hindered its process of modernization and development.

The importance of historical memory

The memory of the Spanish Civil War continues to be a sensitive and controversial topic in Spain. However, it is essential to preserve historical memory and remember the lessons of this tragic episode to prevent future conflicts and guarantee peaceful and democratic coexistence in the country.

  1. Both sides wanted to go to war.
Some defend the socialist revolution, others the fascist revolution. It's absurd to shift the blame to one side, as the Historical Memory Law attempts to do.
The European social context of 1933 radicalized the two Spains and, being the hicks they were, they decided that the one who annihilated all the red communist socialists would govern, or those against them, clerics, people with money, nuns and others.
And everything they want to tell now is stories, usually from the left, to cover up the murders they committed for the simple fact of going to mass.

  2. My parents lived through that war, my father forced to go to the front because he was caught doing military service. My mother, 11 years younger, had a father who moved around Spain to quieter areas than Madrid such as Murcia, given his intellectual qualities and as an accountant.
My father was very hungry and was eaten by lice.
My mother remembers that a shell passed by her and took off the head of a child who was fleeing with his mother from the Reds' bombardment.
My father was separated from his entire family, he couldn't stand the church or the priests but he never knew why.
My mother saw her father in the firing squad and a soldier met him and stopped the shootings that day.
Despite everything, after the war he was imprisoned. That is to say, both sides wanted him dead just because.
After the war, my mother was able to study teaching. My father could only dedicate himself to the black market.
The two sides or the mere fact that there are sides, in a society that, because of what has happened, should have evolved to a higher level in justice, unity and rejection of conflicts or, in other words, peace... ..it seems to me to have little forward evolution and great stagnation in a past that is a puddle of dirty water no matter where you look at it

    • Thank you very much for sharing your story. This week I had to deal with the subject of the Spanish Civil War. It is not a subject that we are taught in school. Here in Mexico we lived through the Mexican Revolution, but I believe that this war (none of them are good) was crueler. I liked what you write, which seems to show that human beings do not evolve or very few do. We should learn from the actions of our ancestors. This struggle to survive should lead us to more concrete and assertive actions in order to have what human beings need. That is not money, it is PEACE.

  3. The history of the civil war is not told well. All the truths about her must be told, both on one side and the other. All the atrocities that both sides did (which were many) killed many innocent people, both one and the other, but that is not counted, only what is convenient for the party that is in power is counted.
Let everyone tell the truth well so that it is known and that both sides and the other stop dividing and sowing as much hatred as there is now so that we can all live in peace.
