If you are thinking about studying at a Spanish university, don't miss the following post where we are going to explain the requirements and steps you have to take to enter the faculty you want. We will explain to you, on the one hand, the academic requirements, and, on the other, advice so as not to "lose" a year.

academic requirements

To be able to study at a university in Spain, you need 7 steps if you have a high school degree issued in the United States:

  1. Finish the high School.
  2. Apostille your title and translate it into Spanish.
  3. Homologate your high school diploma.  Qualifications and a high school diploma will be required, if possible, by means of a certified copy.
  4. study the Subjects accurate for exams. In this case, no one better than us, Escuela PCE, to ensure your access to Spanish universities. Contact us and ask about the courses.
  5. Register for the PCE UNEDasiss Selectivity exams.
  6. Take the PCE UNEDasiss Selectivity (in New York, Seattle or anywhere in the world).
  7. Make university pre-registration.

Easy, right? Escuela PCE can help you with your homologation and all subsequent processes. We will advise you on choosing subjects, guide you in decisions, prepare you for exams and explain how to carry out your university pre-registration. Trust the leading academy to prepare your landing in Spain.

How to take the exams with the American baccalaureate

As we have mentioned, more and more students are finishing their high school education outside of Spain and then pursuing a Spanish university study. The majority come from the United States, and, given our experience, we want to indicate how to proceed in this case.

The normal thing is that the student finishes his studies and uses the following year to prepare for the PCE exams for access to the Spanish university. But it is possible to "win" a year, combining the study of Grade 12 and preparation for the Selectivity. To do this, it is necessary to know the subjects and see the feasibility of studying both preparations. If the student wishes to enter a career with a cut-off grade lower than 12, it is possible that this can be done. If it were older, given the demands, it would be more ideal to prepare more calmly throughout the following year.

If it is the first case, you have to start studying approximately 5/6 months in advance, that is, from January at the latest, and it is advisable to start earlier. Students with a US high school diploma usually have, obviously, a high level for the English exam, so this exam would be a mere procedure, "eliminating" this test from their access.

The next thing to take into account is the short time between the PCE exams and the completion of High School. For this, It is necessary to schedule that, as soon as you finish collecting the diploma, the grades from the last years are translated and the documents are apostilled so that they can immediately be delivered to the Spanish consulate. Only in this way can you present and have a valid access note the same year you finish your high school degree in the United States. Obviously you have to have that plan well drawn up and have prior summons so that all documents can be delivered on time.

Escuela PCE can, in all cases, guide the student and family to draw up this plan, in addition to carrying out the corresponding preparation of subjects according to their studies and preferences.

  1. Hello, my son is currently in 11th grade in high school. My question is: is it better for him to finish high school in the USA, or can he finish 11th grade and continue 12th grade in Spain? He wants to study automotive mechanics.
    Thanks and Regards

    • We would need to review this situation in a consultation. It might be more advantageous for him to complete his studies in the United States. But, as we said, we would need to assess this further.

  5. Hello. My daughter is studying there this year. Can she take PCE tests in NY? Can you take the exams this year without having finished high school? Gracoas

    • Hello Noelia. In order to obtain the PCE grade it is necessary that you have finished high school and have started the homologation of your studies. Keep in mind that the university entrance grade is made up of the average high school grade and the PCE grade.

      • So, you can only take the PCE once you finish high school?

        • Hello Elisa. Normally yes, she must have finished high school. However, US students finish their last year in May/June and it coincides with the PCE tests. To register for the exam you would have to have started the homologation of your degree between February and May. Since you have not completed it, you cannot start this procedure. This has the consequence that if you have not started the process, even if you do the PCE, you will not be able to see the grades you obtained in June. We recommend that you write to UNED so that they can give you a solution to this, since there are numerous students in your situation. All the best
