A) For those who ALREADY HAVE a card from their country of origin

Is your license valid in Spain?
- Citizens of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA). If your license was issued in an EU or EEA country (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), you can drive in Spain with it as long as it's valid. However, if you've resided in Spain for more than two years, you'll need to register it with the DGT (Directorate-General for Traffic) or exchange it if your country requires it.
- Countries with an agreement with Spain. If your country has a bilateral agreement with Spain, you can apply to exchange your license for a Spanish one, without having to take any theoretical or practical exams. You can consult the complete and updated list on the official website of the Spanish Ministry of Education. Directorate General of Traffic (DGT)The countries with agreements are: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Dominican Republic, Uruguay, Venezuela, Andorra, Algeria, Morocco, the Philippines, South Korea, Serbia, Turkey, Switzerland, North Macedonia, and Ukraine. If your card was issued in a country without an agreement, you will not be able to exchange it.Some examples: the United States, Canada, China, India, Australia, Russia, South Africa... In these cases, you'll have to complete the entire process to obtain a Spanish driver's license from scratch, including taking exams.
Requirements to be able to exchange driving licenses
To process the exchange of your foreign permit for a Spanish one, you must meet the following requirements and submit the corresponding documentation:
- General requirements:
- Be a legal resident in Spain (have a valid NIE or TIE).
- The driver's license must be valid and have been obtained before obtaining residency in Spain.
- Your country must be on the list of countries with a current agreement.
- Usual documentation:
- Official exchange application (can be done online or in person at the DGT).
- Original and copy of foreign driver's license.
- Identity document (NIE/TIE) and passport.
- Census register certificates.
- Psychophysical aptitude report (psychotechnical test).
- Recent passport-style photograph.
- Payment of the corresponding fee.

What if your country DOESN’T have an agreement?

B) For those who DO NOT have a driver's license
If you've never had a driver's license in your home country or if you can't exchange it in Spain due to a lack of a driving license agreement, you'll need to obtain a Spanish driver's license from scratch. This process is similar for all Spanish residents, although as a foreigner, it may be helpful to have a driving school that offers specific support.
Initial requirements for obtaining a driver's license in Spain
Before starting the process, you must meet some basic requirements:
- Be a legal resident in Spain (have a valid NIE or TIE).
- Be registered in the municipality where you live.
- Be of minimum age: 18 years for a type B license (tourism) and/or 16 years for mopeds (AM) or light motorcycles (A1).
Process to obtain a Spanish driving license
- Psychotechnical recognition. You must go to an authorized medical center to obtain a physical fitness report. They will evaluate your vision, reflexes, and coordination. This is a mandatory step.
- Theoretical exam. You can prepare yourself or with a driving school.
- The exam consists of 30 multiple-choice questions. Passing is possible with a maximum of 3 errors.
- It is available in several languages (English, French, German), although not in all centers.

- Practical driving test. You will only be able to apply after passing the theory test.
- You do it with a driving school car and an official examiner.
- They assess your ability to drive safely in real-life environments.
